The Middle Empire a film how old? From 9 years old
Asterix and Obelix: The Middle Kingdom is a 2023 film. Some digital special effects, neat sets. A narrator is sometimes present. We will follow the heroes and alternate other events (including other flashbacks). Succession of gags. With the different journeys, we are shown the routes on a map (with the narrator, because it is not always easy to follow) (he is aware of this by the way).
MESSAGES
Friendship
Asterix and Obelix are best buddies (but there can be arguments). Having a boyfriend is important (and eating wild boar together is important) (and when the girls show up, it’s always complicated for the friendship relationship).
Help others
When one has potential (here that one is strong), one must help others.
Combat
Do not inherit to hit Romans when you come across them (or any people who mess around) (there is no point in arguing, you have to know how to hit). Strength. Example of people who revalue themselves above all thanks to their strength. Kung Fu. Chinese princess bodyguard strikes in a kung fu way. Self esteem. It’s not easy for Asterix to have to use the potion to get strong, he feels like he sucks. We feel a little jealous of Obélix.
Love
We see that men are interested in women (rather the beautiful ones). Asterix falls in love at first sight of a beautiful woman. Obelix falls in love with the bodyguard, Tat Han, who fights well. Epidemaïs wouldn’t mind sleeping with the Empress. And this story takes place because the pretty princess did not want to marry the vile Deng Tsin Qin. Jealousy. We see that Graindemaïs is in love with the princess, like Asterix and that there is a certain confrontation between the two. Falbala does not appreciate the romance between Obelix and Tat Han. Adultery. Cleopatra cheats on Caesar with her gym teacher. We will see Caesar no longer let himself be done because he is suffering. Pickup. We see how it is the men who will flirt with the girls. Tolerance. We can love anyone a little, even a person considered ugly in China (he hides under a mask, because he is ashamed) (yet it is with him that the princess will end up). If the theme of tolerance is addressed here, it is sometimes big stereotypes thought of as comical, which distance us a little from the other.
Stereotype
Nationality. We make gags around Chinese nationality (typical Chinese music, we talk about slanted eyes, we make fun of Chinese names). gender. When the fishmonger’s wife says that his fish are no longer very fresh, he tells her that she is not very fresh either. Cleopatra tells Caesar that he has a little one and he doesn’t know how to deal with it. Homosexuality. Biopix is shown as a somewhat laughable homosexual.
Asterix and Obelix: The Middle Kingdom
successful woman
Apart from the different stereotypes around women, we want to try to highlight women. Carioca tries to explain gender equality to Caesar (but he laughs at her). The princess has a successful female bodyguard.
Consumption
We mock the need to consume (expensive shoes with red soles. We criticize perfume advertising. We show an advertisement praising soaps with half-naked Cleopatra).
Bragging
People criticize César for being very pretentious, he thinks he is the best. Graindemaïs tries to pretend to be something he is not.
Friendship between peoples
Big final banquet at the Gauls where the Chinese are invited (with a mix of culture). Mixed couple. We are shown that the French and the Chinese can work well together (even if the princess is not going to end up with Asterix at the end) (and Obélix seems to have found a lover, Tat Han, but she goes back to China anyway) (each at home eventually).
Naivete
Obélix believes everything he is told (and does not consider himself a grown-up yet).
Vegetarian
Asterix wonders if we shouldn’t stop eating boars all the time (vegetables can be good). A vegetarian can modify his diet, but he must not impose it on others (good at the end of the film, we see how much he still appreciates meat) (and we understand that Asterix especially wanted to ensure that his friend feeds a little better).
Asterix and Obelix: The Middle Kingdom
DIFFICULT SCENES
Hazards
Arrows fly in all directions and risk reaching the princess, passers-by run in all directions. Epidemaïs gets hit. War scene with a warrior (Antivirus) who fights while everything burns around him, we see in parallel the soldiers opening the cities so that they continue to attack. The heroes find themselves surrounded by the Romans, fighting against spears and in hand-to-hand combat. The two armies face each other and rush against each other, with exchanges of heavy blows. An arrow pierces the gourd, there are no more potions and Asterix was going to be killed (Obelix helps him). The Romans take over, the heroes are surrounded and all seems lost, they are pointed by pointed spears.
Faintness
Deng Tsin Qin, the Queen’s advisor doesn’t look happy that he was laughed at when he asked for the princess’s hand. The princess must flee through a secret passage with Graindemaïs. Deng Tsin Qin wants to behead the Empress and Graindemais. Abraracourcix does not want to help the princess, he refuses that Asterix and Oblelix go there. Bonemine criticizes her husband. Assurancetourix receives a big blow because he sings. Cleopatra says she wants to leave Caesar to be with Tabascos (her gymnastics teacher). Asterix, Obelix and Graindemaïs subdue the princess hidden behind the reeds. The princess hopes her mother is still alive. Carioca is not happy that we put short outfits on women, César makes fun of her. Obelix doesn’t want to help Asterix against the villains who are bothering the landlady, he sees a special magic potion that makes him stick out a big tongue, stick out elephant ears. Epidemaïs begins to flirt with the Empress (who is not happy to end up with him in prison). The pirates meet the Gauls, we see them crying (while the other two are motivated to hit them, but it’s the bodyguard who will show his potential and hit them kung-fu style). Antivirus sends Biopix ashore, which seemed to like it. Obelix is seen getting angry when Tat Han doesn’t tell him everything. Asterix mocks Obelix’s love for Tat Han. Asterix wants to tell Obelix that he no longer wants him to stay with him in his house since he hopes to take the princess there. We learn that there will be the decapitation of the Empress (and that it is necessary to reserve to attend this). Epidemaïs hid during the fight and he comes back when it’s over. Caesar who has just sent a pigeon for Cleopatra to go away receives a message telling him that she is sorry (he is badly) (and we see a laughable sequence in love). Tat Han climbs a high cliff in a few jumps, it’s quite perilous, she frees the Empress (but Epidemaïs wants to stay) (they jump into the void to go down again). Strange moment between Obélix and Tat Han who give each other affection. Caesar, who has drunk too much, thinks he sees Cleopatra and kisses Deng Tsin Qin. Worrying prince of Deng who is feared to be very ugly (and when he takes off his mask, he is handsome and the princess falls in love). Sad Asterix who sees the princess in love (he is close to crying). Asterix shares his magic potion, but not with Graindemaïs. The coward Graindemaïs pretends to be hurt. Caesar leaves in front of the large number of Chinese soldiers. Caesar receives a message from Cleopatra, who no longer wants to see him, he leaves sad. Pathetic Asterix who cannot have the princess and who would be almost interested in Falbala when Obelix drops her. Obelix sends Tat Han a little too high in the sky.
Normalization of violence
We kick to make people laugh. Abdelmalix and Toufix receive slaps. Assurancetourix gets hit with every appearance. And we enjoy the fights.
Mockery
We make fun of the different characters a bit to make lots of gags (Asterix asks himself vegetarian questions when he wants to stop eating wild boar, or conspiratorial when he wonders what’s in the magic potion) (we can send a fish at the head of the bard who falls from the top of his house) (moreover Assurancetourix is often hit) (we make fun of Epiddemaïs who does not understand the maxim). The pirates all look rather laughable. We make fun of acupuncture (with the two Gauls who find themselves well stung and shouting at each other). We laugh at kung-fu (which can do nothing against the blows of heroes). Caesar gets crap on it from the pigeon he held in his arms thinking of his lover. They make fun of an old blind man whom Epiddemaïs hits. We don’t care about football and changes for a minor injury.
Health
Alcohol. César discovers rice alcohol and appreciates it.
VOCABULARY
Classic. Sometimes limit (you can’t close it, ). The voice of some actors (mostly celebrities) does not always sound right. Full of puns (of the type, do not tell Caesar salad).
There are no scary scenes or real villains, but the film is rather slow. Actors (who are often celebrities) don’t always play their roles well and sometimes just appear for a few seconds. The humor is close to the world of Asterix, we feel that there is a bit of a problem with the representation of nationalities or women. Lots of gags around puns that the youngest won’t grasp. Better to be 9 years old to discover this film where the hits are thought to make you laugh and where the romances are also thought to make you laugh.
The anime of Asterix (Asterix the Gaul, Caesar’s surprise, the Indians, the blow of the menhir, the Bretons, the 12 labors, Cleopatra, the Vikings). As well as films with actors, such as Asterix and Obelix: Cleopatra mission – Asterix in the service of her Majesty – Asterix and Obelix: The Middle Empire.
what others say : In Switzerland, the legal age to see the film at the cinema is 8 years old and Filming recommend it from the age of 10 “ In this new adventure, Asterix and Obelix, courageous Gauls, are called in as reinforcements to free the Empress of China, prisoner of one of her vassals. The journey becomes more complicated with the arrival of Caesar and his powerful army. To dazzle Cleopatra, he wishes to govern the Middle Empire. Many cultural references, China, Egypt, Gaul, Rome, which are treated with humor and caricatured, just like the links between man and woman. The film is long and includes scenes of battles and fights. The two protagonists, after their adventures and their romantic winks, return to their village, faithful to their community and to their duo. Family comedy, despite the length, the speed of context changes and the need for cultural references that complicate understanding for the youngest“.
