It's not magic, it's Rocket Book, a good way to introduce this smart notebook. It erases your notes when you put it in the microwave but can also upload to the cloud what you note. Not very common for a simple notebook. But that's the thing, it's not like any other notebook. He is directly smart health connected to an application. The perfect combination of two worlds. When you hesitate between your tablet, your phone or your computer and a good old sheet of paper (which you can easily lose) the Rocket book is a good compromise. Althoughusable with any pen, the interest of this book compared to its competitors lies in the pencil delivered with. Has a special ink that becomes transparent to heat, you can erase it and start again easily. Passing the notebook for 30 seconds in the microwave, poof, as if by magic your words disappear to make way for others. This technique is not unlimited but all the same reusable about 25 times. The binding of the notebook is made of a metal specially studied not to interfere with the microwave.
Rocketbook Unboxing
During this Review, we had three Rocketbooks available: two Waves and a One: a smaller format containing more pages, but which cannot be put in the microwave. This Review will mainly concern the Wave, but the App functionality is the same on both models.
The packaging of the Rocketbook is quite simplistic, it looks more like a sachet. It may only be a notebook, but a box would have been appreciated. The plastic material of the bag has been designed to add a rather effective pressure closure system. In addition to the notebook, the packaging contains a Pilot FriXion pen in a space designed for this purpose. Only these pens can be erased in the microwave.
The inside of the bag has ends glued and smart health connected to the outside, care should be taken when opening the bag and when storing the notebook so that the spirals or a sudden opening cannot take off this part.
On the back of the package you can see the different instructions and advice on using the product. It also indicates the website on which the application is available. It’s also on the Google Play and App Store.
Rocketbook design and ergonomics
After unpacking, we can finally put our eyes on the notebook. The Rocketbook Wave has a rather sober design, its first and last pages are similar. They are the same color: a blue turning to green, only the order of the elements appearing there changes.
On the first page, you can see the Wave logo, the product name located on the upper part, and a pattern drawn towards the central part. As for the last page, the same elements previously described appear in the opposite order.
After opening the notebook, we can see special dotted lines, a QR Code, as well as footer icons corresponding to a Cloud service to store its data.
Regarding the Rocketbook One, the design is different. Starting with the chosen color: purple. In terms of visual signals, only the logo is mentioned at the bottom right on this first page. The name of the product being written on the second page with an indication concerning its use.
Rocketbook application
After downloading, the application will request access to internal content over the phone as for multimedia files for example.
After authorizing access, it is necessary to create a Rocketbook account to be able to benefit from the application's functionalities.
After creating your personal account, the user has access to new possibilities, such as analyzing pages in the Rocketbook via the phone's camera, transferring images via a data storage service or even viewing photos taken with the mobile phone.
When the user decides to analyze the pages of his notebook via the application for the first time, two instructions appear concerning the icons at the bottom of the pages to be completed as well as on top the verification symbol.
When the user decides to send their data to a Cloud, he must first connect via his account. Before this operation, he must choose the icon that he will have blackened on the notebook beforehand after taking note.
Using the Rocketbook
There are two main uses for the Rocketbook: erase the notes via a small passage in the microwave, and save these same notes in the Cloud via the application. We were able to Review both and find that they worked well.
First, we wrote on the notebook before we put it in the microwave. In order to verify compatibility with different pens, we chose to write with the FriXion pen supplied in the packaging and with a classic bic pen. The difference is clear: one disappears completely and the other does not move a bit.
If you leave your “leather” notebook for 30 seconds, there will surely be visible words. You will need to let it heat up for about a minute to make sure everything is cleared. Important point: the heating time will depend mainly on where you wrote on the page : the further you move from the center, the longer it will take for the writing to go away.
On the other hand, the app works well. The main screen is a camera that prompts you to place the notebook page in the center of the image. Once done, you have nothing to do; the application recognizes the QR code and takes the photo automatically. It is saved in the Cloud and you can access it from the application.
Writing with the RocketBook pen
If the ink is erased as expected, does the RocketBook also deliver on its pen use? Indeed, why not simply opt for a traditional agenda if you can't even put your thoughts in this smart notebook?
Good news, writing on the pages of the RocketBook is a rather pleasant experience. In fact, we are very far from writing with a stylus on a touch screen, like on an iPad. In fact, we could almost forget that we are using a special notebook.
We chose "almost", because some differences still exist, and take away some of the pleasure that we feel. First, it should be noted that the Frixion pen does not produce not always such precise lines than a traditional model. However, you can avoid this with practice.
Then, the glossy pages are a little more slippery than the papers usually used for notebooks or diaries. Of course, this texture is necessary for the text to fade in the microwave.
Finally, it should also be noted that the ink takes a while to dry on the RocketBook pages. If the time required is not too long, you may still stain your hands at the slightest sudden gesture.
The Rocketbook against the competition
the Smart Notebook market is not very large, yet there are some interesting products that are reinventing the way of taking notes and sharing them.
Moleskin: The Creative Notebook
Rockets' main competitor is Moleskin's Smart Notebook. The latter does not offer to erase your notes in the microwave, but it does have an application that resembles that of the Rocketbook. You can therefore save your pages on the application and then retrieve and rework them on the software of your choice. The Moleskin notebook nevertheless costs 6 € more than that of RocketInnovation. When we add the fact that the second has additional functionality, we can only conclude that the Rocketbook is more interesting.
Elfin Book II: The Lifetime Smart NoteBook
Elfinbook offers the same properties as its competitors, however it is more efficient and more ecological. infinitely reusable, it never wears out and you can erase your notes with a simple damp cloth. The application is much clearer and more intuitive. You can find all your notes in the blink of an eye.
Conclusion
The RocketBook offers good grip, easy and clear. The object is actually quite aesthetic, there is a good choice of colors. The application has a lot to do with the ease of use of this smart health smart health connected object. It has been simplified to the maximum and it shows, we are going much faster. On the functionality side, RocketBook keeps its promises, even if after a while our notes erase much less and this tends to leave traces. To be honest it is a very useful and practical object, even its price is attractive. In short, the RocketBook is a useful accessory and it is ultimately a good compromise between the pen and the keyboard.
