the smart health connected bra that detects breast cancer

Developed by a group of students, the SmartBra smart health connected bra detects the first signs of breast cancer non-invasively.

Developed as part of their course at EPFL in Lausanne, smart clothing is, according to the students, the first of its kind. In fact, the invention uses technology developed by the startup IcosaMed, which specializes in the fight against cancer through smart health connected textiles.

SmartBra: how the smart health connected bra detects breast cancer

It all starts with piezoelectric sensors that emit ultrasound. The device actually works like a traveling ultrasound system. Despite its complexity, the device is miniaturized, ensuring total comfort for those who wear the bra. As soon as the system detects a suspect cluster of cells, the underwear alerts its owner in order to schedule a medical appointment to establish a diagnosis.

Ambitious, the small team hopes that its smart health connected bra will revolutionize the fight against cancer, especially by doing more than screening. One of their ideas for improving disease prevention is particularly promising. So by continuously targeting cancerous clusters with ultrasound, SmartBra could disintegrate malignant cells.

Marketing and other projects for the future

Students plan to market their invention in 2021. At first, they will only target women who already have cancer. The product will allow daily monitoring of the evolution of their condition. Nevertheless, they plan to sell the 2.0 underwear to all women over the long term.

For this project, the young people have developed a plastic interface. Equipped with ultrasonic transmitters, it replaces the gel used during an ultrasound. But this latest invention could also be used on other underwear or combinations. They too could then detect and prevent cancer.

Thanks to SmartBra, students have already managed to harvest CHF 4 million to finance the smart health connected bra and their other projects.
