the smart health connected device that makes your bike smart

[ad_1]

Born from a Kickstarter campaign that raised over $ 500,000, the SmartHalo project is now concrete and accessible. Created by the CycleLabs group, the device must help cyclists to move around the cities. It promises a solution to all the problems of city life, from navigation to security. Overall, this is what Canadian society has achieved.

Unboxing of the SmartHalo

The box of SmartHalo is small, as one could suppose with the visuals of the device which it contains. In her design, she reminds of Apple products with his fine calligraphy and the important presence of white. It also puts forward the possibilities offered by the machine on each of its faces, each time with a color code different. The box is thus made quite attractive, with a mix of bright colors and sobriety.

The opening is done on all the volume of the box, so it is necessary be careful when taking itat the risk of dropping everything. Like the rest, the interior looks simple and neat, with the SmartHalo placed in the center. We are surprised when we notice that the necessary to use the device and hang on his bike was stuffed in the box. Far from the overall aesthetic present until then, we end up with a bag of screws, hooks and other small objects randomly placed here and there, in addition to a power cable. Note that we can not find no instructions for use in the box, and you have to go to the application to learn to install everything.

Design and ergonomics of SmartHalo

At first glance, one may be worried about the design of the SmartHalo. With all the necessary components and lack of clear packaging, we fear the worst at the time of assembly. It finally turns out very easy to install on the bike. The application is clear on the procedure to follow and it is necessary barely ten minutes for everything to be put in place. The device also has the advantage of being able to be any type of bike. With the various tools included, we can indeed adapt the size of the hooks and check their layout. The SmartHalo is then perfectly positioned and holds in all circumstances.

Once installed, the device fits well to the vehicle and does not seem to have been added, as its design matches the lines of most two-wheelers. The different effects of lights also give a very aesthetic side to the device, even if they are there primarily for a question of utility. Easily accessible, it responds well to commands and you just have to touch it to react. We could almost find it sometimes a bit too sensitive and count, for example, two keys instead of one. It should be noted that if the SmartHalo's attachments do not come off (at least not by hand), it is possible to remove the object itself if you prefer to keep it warm. However, the device is waterproof and will not fear the water if it is left in the rain.

Getting started with the SmartHalo

If the SmartHalo goes with an application (we'll come back to it), it can be used directly. His screen reacts to touch and some of its functions are accessible through touch. The machine can only be removed by its user (with his mobile phone) and therefore acts as an alarm in addition to locking the bike. In order not to get stuck the smartphone falls short of battery, CycleLabs has set up a Morse-like system. When setting up the SmartHalo, you can choose a key codeeither short or long Without a mobile phone, you can activate or deactivate this function, which will react if we shake the bike too much and will trigger an alarm. Same thing for the lamp integrated into the device: a pressure and the light comes on.

Although these functions seem simple, they are not not so instinctive. The fault is sometimes too great sensitivity that launches a task without doing it on purpose. The use of this type of technology being rare on a bike, we can also put the difficulties that we experience on the account of a lack of habit. It should be noted that the machine only turns on if it is plugged. So just be a little too hurried to forget, and no button does not activate it.

SmartHalo application

Like many smart health connected objects, most SmartHalo functions are smartphone-related. Its alarm / lock and its integrated lamp previously discussed are obviously accessible and configurable. If this object had such a success on Kickstater, it is above all for his GPS system. In addition to being very preciseit transmits to the device the path to take, which is indicated with a light. The direction is very simple to understand and this is the most innovative aspect of the SmartHalo, since it gives a real sensation of novelty in the movement.

Among its other possibilities, the application is less revolutionary. It becomes, with the device, a wizard smart health connected more, although more convenient to carry. He then acts as a coach by calculating your efforts and by indicating to you in a circle what you have to do. A visual signal is also sent to each call or message received. Nothing very original therefore, but the signals are effective without disturbing the driving.

The SmartHalo against the competition

The SmartHalo belongs to a very particular category of smart health connected objects, so it is difficult to find a competitor. There is one, however, of French origin: the HAIKU. Just like his opponent, he clings to the handlebars and serves as a GPS, sports coach and call assistant.

However, its display is neither aesthetic nor instinctive than the SmartHalo because it uses a system similar to conventional GPS (arrows, number of meters). It has the advantage of being slightly cheaper (129 euros) and to "clipper" directly on the bike without prior installation. That said, for 20 euros more, both take a product of better quality and with more functions.

Conclusion of SmartHalo

If there is not a revolution in the world of smart health connected wizards, the SmartHalo stands out despite all the others. Its GPS system is very instinctive and flawless precision, in addition to being aesthetic. As for the rest of his functions, they are effective if they do not really renew the genre. The alarm, the sports coach, the light and the calls work well, can be reconfigured very simply. In its design, the device is both elegant and easy to assemble, in addition to being very solid. However, it is not free from defects, since it is sometimes too sensitive in its tactile use. The fact of not being able to light the machine without connecting it is the only true design flaw. A pebble in the shoe that does not prevent the SmartHalo from being a good product.

Good points

  • A very precise and instinctive GPS

  • Effective functions …

  • Easy to assemble

  • A design that adapts to any bike

Negative points

  • Impossible to light without plugging in

  • … without being really original

  • Touch screen sometimes too sensitive

Design and Ergonomics : At first glance, the construction of the support can be scary. It is actually very easy to assemble and allows the SmartHalo to be easily accessible while integrating well with the bike

Application and features : The application is easily configurable and easy to use. The GPS and the alarm are particularly well thought out. Too bad the other features are not less commonplace

Use and Handling When it comes to the direct use of the product, and therefore tactile, it reacts quickly and well. It is unfortunately sometimes too sensitive, even if it does not spoil a trip.

Quality / price ratio : At 149 euros, the SmartHalo is at the price it deserves for regular use of a bike. If you only take it occasionally, wait for a slight drop in price
