The surgeon's revolution 3.0 is underway!
[ad_1]
There are many changes happening in our society right now, and with Doctor Shafi Ahmed, the surgeon profession is surging, quite impressive in the future. After a first operation broadcast in full in virtual reality, and a school of remote surgeons, portrait of a pioneer of surgery 3.0.
Doctor Shafi Ahmed is an emblematic figure of what could become surgery in a few years, specialist in the treatment of cancers, he is the co-founder since 2015, of a clinic that uses virtual reality and augmented reality in the medical field. This week, he piloted a fully filmed operation for virtual reality.
Interactive surgery is taking a new turn
These are targeted, but very emblematic actions that make it possible to revolutionize a particular area, and that is exactly what the doctor is doing. Shafi ahmed, with surgery. This week, specifically April 14, is planned to remove part of a colon from a 70-year-old man. A routine operation and, a priori, without risks, but which will take a very futuristic turn… Indeed, surgeons of the whole world, will be able follow the operation live from their smartphones.
For this, a 360 degree camera which retransmits the images in 4k, will be installed above the operating table. In this way, students will be able to follow each action of the operation thanks to virtual reality glasses, as if they were there. It’s a way completely new to approach training and to understand medicine.
In order to avoid retransmitting images of an operation that would go wrong, you never know … The images will have an offset of about one minute. Even though Dr. Shafi Ahmed thinks it is a trainer to show surgical students how to deal with emergency situations in which the patient's vital prognosis is at stake.
A surgeon revolution is underway
This is not the first time that Dr. Shafi Ahmed has wanted to use new technologies to revolutionize the world of health. In fact, in 2013, he was already harassing the giant Google to obtain augmented reality glasses to set up distance surgeon training.
Sensitive to equity issues in access to medical care, Doctor Shafi Ahmed has been traveling for many years to poor and isolated countries, to provide surgical students with advanced training. It was by observing the difficult case of Gaza, which is a country completely closed in on itself because of the geo-political situation which lasts there, that he had the idea to set up his own school of surgeons but completely at a distance.
Tomorrow’s students will only need a good internet connection and a virtual reality headset to benefit from distance learning. The main thing is to bet on the next advances in medicine to imagine gloves that transcribe the touch that surgeons can feel in full operation.
Doctor Shafi Ahmed goes even further by talking about “Surgical singularity”, this idea which is very often discussed in the world of science fiction, but under the name of "technological singularity", indicates the moment when robots and artificial intelligences will overtake us. From this upheaval, at what level will man be? This is a question that will not be answered for a long time … But when? That is the question !
