The Tesla Model 3 widens the gap in the top 10 electric cars in France

VIDEO // The Model 3 of the Californian manufacturer Tesla is a hit in France, with 5,001 registrations in June alone. It thus continues its race in front of the Renault Zoé and the Peugeot e-208.

922,594 passenger cars were sold in France between January and June 2021, according to data provided by the Committee of French Automobile Manufacturers (CCFA). And 72,454 100% electric cars were sold over the same period. The latter are back ahead of plug-in hybrids which accumulate over the same period 71,708 registrations. And the undisputed star of full electric is undoubtedly the Tesla Model 3.

The Californian manufacturer’s car, which came first in the first quarter and had lost ground since, regained pole position in the first 5 months of the year and widened the gap in June to remain at the top of the ranking of cumulative sales on the first half of 2021. If not, it comes in 18th place in registrations, all engines combined over the half year, ahead of the Renault Zoé which is in 20th place (respectively 20th and 24th place the previous month of the cumulative ranking).

An acceleration before the reduction of the ecological bonus?

Several factors must be taken into consideration. This is largely explained by the organization of deliveries from the Californian manufacturer to France at the end of the quarter. At Tesla, it is explained that vehicles are produced in the Fremont plant on a quarterly cycle. However, the first boats arrive from the second half of the second month of the quarter. There is therefore always a beginning of an increase in registrations at this time, it is specified, and with strong sales in the last month of the quarter. Tesla’s new pricing policy, which is very aggressive, especially for the Model 3 SR +, has also supported sales since the start of the year.

Last but not least, the planned reduction in the ecological bonus on July 1 undoubtedly had an accelerating effect on orders at the end of the first half of the year. Capped at € 7,000 (27% of the purchase price), it rose to € 6,000 from Thursday, July 1, 2021.

Concretely, the Model 3 displays 5,001 registrations in June and has accumulated 13,084 over the first six months of the year. It is therefore still ahead of the Renault Zoé which is also widening the gap with its next, the Peugeot e-208. Among the semi-surprises of this ranking, we also note the good health of the Volkswagen ID.3 which goes back to 8th place over 6 months of registrations.
