These bionic lenses can correct our eyesight for life

Imagine for a moment that it is possible to achieve visual acuity three times higher than normal without suffering from any disorder and without having to wear glasses or put on lenses every day. Science fiction? Perhaps, but it may soon be reality thanks to the work of Dr. Garth Webb, an optometrist based in Canada.

With his team, he actually invented bionic lenses capable of correcting any vision problem … for life. And beware because this applies to myopia, presbyopia or even astigmatism.

Bionic lens

With bionic lenses, we will soon be able to correct any vision problem … for life.

The Ocumetrics Bionic Lens, the name of this invention, comes in the form of a small round prosthesis folded back on itself.

The procedure will not last more than eight minutes and will be completely painless

It will be placed above the cornea and the lens and it will only take ten seconds to correct the visual disturbances from which patients suffer. The procedure will not last more than eight minutes and will be completely painless. It can therefore be done without anesthesia.

According to the team in charge of the project, these lenses will not only correct vision problems and they will also improve it. Once in place, they will even allow us to see the time of a clock located fifteen meters away.

This invention also has another interesting advantage. It eliminates the risk of cataracts since it replaces the natural lens of the eye. Thanks to it, patients will be able to avoid all the risks associated with laser-based surgeries and the best thing in history is that these lenses will not deteriorate over time.

They will therefore be able to support patients throughout their lives.

Dr. Garth Webb took advantage of a cataract conference to present his invention. The first trials should start very soon, but they will first be carried out on animals. If all goes well, the lenses will then be tested on blind people.

Next, Dr. Webb and his associates will need to obtain regulatory approval from Canada and other countries around the world. The lens will probably not be marketed until 2017 or 2018 at best.

And that is by assuming that everything is going well. Finally, note that it will take more than 25 years to be able to benefit from this invention.
