This smart cart eliminates the need for cashiers in stores

What if a smart cart would end long queues at the checkout? The past two decades have seen a major upheaval in the way we buy our supplies.

I'm thinking in particular of online stores or Amazon Go stores. New step: the intelligent cart developed by the Caper startup.

Caper has developed a smart cart that allows customers to scan items during their purchases and pay for everything they put in the cart before leaving. The cart has an interactive screen and a card reader. The cart is already in use in two stores in New York. It is also used in Key Food Fresh, Met Fresh and Pioneer supermarkets.

For me, I think this is an attractive alternative for stores that want to rationalize their physical purchases, but cannot reach the level offered by an Amazon Go store.

Caper's smart cart also alerts customers to deals for products similar to the ones they are scanning; or nearby products. According to Caper, this leads customers to buy 18% more products when using automated carts. Caper's long-term goal is to completely eliminate scanning technology and rely on a deep learning algorithm capable of identifying objects using cameras and scales placed in the smart health connected cart.

According to TechCrunch, Caper plans to expand its business to 150 new stores in 2019 and is supported by Max Mullen; the co-founder of Instacart, as an investor. In my opinion, this system should quickly deploy in American stores and in the rest of the world.

It remains to be seen how supermarkets will approach the employment issue. Will they cut jobs or move cashier jobs to others?
