Tidewave – with gentle waves against bedsores

[ad_1]

Tidewave weighs bedridden and thus avoids bed sores

Pressure ulcers are a treacherous consequence of immobility while lying down. It can develop on parts of the body where there are bony protrusions within a few hours, is painful for those affected and further restricts mobility. To avoid pressure ulcers, the patient has to be moved around every two hours – even at night. The health of the nursing staff also suffers indirectly from the complaints of the bedridden: The physically very strenuous lifting and turning of patients in the course of working life can hit the spine and cause serious postural damage. Pressure ulcer prevention is also very personnel-intensive. Last but not least, the nightly procedure interrupts the immobile person's sleep. Relaxed sleep through, which is essential for the general well-being of people with health problems anyway, becomes impossible. The Norwegian medical device manufacturer Tidewave has developed a smart mattress system that automatically relocates needy patients – gently following the example of tidal waves, in which the water level shifts rhythmically and retracts again.

This is how Tidewave brings movement to the mattress

Every fifth patient develops a pressure ulcer during his stay in a European care facility. With the spread of Tidewave, this problem could be significantly reduced. The intelligent rotating mattress moves the bedridden in an independent rhythm – so gently that deep sleep is not interrupted.

The background

The basic idea for the Tidewave mattress dates back to the 1990s: a construction for gently lifting heavy loads in the form of a curved, mechanical mattress that was shaped like a cradle. The project was idle for many years after the death of its developer, but has been further developed since 2016 by his granddaughter and her team.

The technology

The original cradle-shaped mattress was replaced by a pneumatic air mattress. The mattress consists of separate air cushions. There, air is systematically introduced and discharged using a compressor, the mattress lying on top with the patient lying down is partially raised or lowered from below, thus achieving the curved shape. The bedridden person is gently pushed into another lying position – like a natural sleep movement. The Tidewave mattresses have been developed in such a way that they roll up and are therefore easier to transport – this also makes handling in the care facility easier.

The intelligence

The individual air cushions are controlled via a kind of mixer. The electronics are in a lightweight technology case smart health connected to the mattress by cable. With intelligent sensor learning technology, mattress technology is currently being further optimized and can ultimately be tailored to the patient's needs. To ensure the most detailed, natural control of the mattress, Tidewave has conducted extensive studies in hospitals and nursing homes.

Tidewave compared to other pressure ulcer prevention techniques

In everyday care, mechanical aids are primarily used to avoid bedsores: wedge pillows, blankets, or even water-filled latex gloves. Conventional bedsore mattresses work by pneumatically changing the horizontal pressure zones on the surface. Tidewave improves this principle by actually changing the patient's position, instead of just modifying the hardness of the bed surface. The design of the mattress is practical to use. The highlight, however, is the ability to learn, which allows the optimal coordination between mattress and patient.

Conclusion: Tidewave relaxes the care business

The use of Tidewave products means monetary savings, staff relief and improved care for those affected. The mattresses look like normal bed accessories, are made of light material and are compatible with standard care beds. The system

  • relieves nursing staff physically and temporally,

  • is comfortable for bedridden people,

  • effectively prevents bedsores,

  • saves resources for care facilities and clinics.

The acquisition costs for the Tidewave rotary mattresses pay for themselves in a short time and help to optimize the care and quality of life of the patients.

Pricing and availability Tidewave

The Tidewave-Mattresses are currently still in the development stage and are therefore not yet available for institutions and private users. However, the start-up is approaching market maturity with giant strides and has already convinced with successful presentations at trade fairs. Interested parties can keep an eye on the further development steps via Facebook and can already contact the company directly for further information.
