Tommy Hilfiger TH24 / 7 You in the Review: smart, but loveless
With the model TH24 / 7 You, the fashion label Tommy Hilfiger is expanding its portfolio with a smartwatch with Wear OS. In the practical Review, we found once again that a well-sounding brand name alone is not enough to convince.
scope of delivery
The Tommy Hilfiger smartwatch arrives at the customer in a simple cardboard box. In addition to the watch with protective film, a magnetic USB charging cable is included. A suitable power supply is not included.
design
With a height of 13 millimeters and a diameter of 45 millimeters, the case of the TH24 / 7 You is relatively bulky and weighs 150 grams including the link bracelet. For comparison: the Smartwatch by Hugo Boss weighs just under 100 grams, the one by Skagen just 56. Instead of a crown, a control button is installed. A quick-change clasp for the bracelet, such as that offered by Fossil or Hugo Boss, is not available. If you want to change the metal bracelet, you need the right watchmaker tool.
The two contacts for the connection with the charging cable are located on the underside of the watch. For recharging, the magnetic end of the cable is placed on the housing and snaps into place. Basically, this charging technology works; but only as long as the contact surfaces are clean. If dust settles and forms corrosion after several months of use, contact problems can arise. The watch heats up significantly during charging.
We really like the neat workmanship of the case and the small details – such as the logo on the clasp and control button. What disappointed us, however, is the somewhat loveless design and the rattled stainless steel bracelet of the TH24 / 7 You. It looks too light compared to the case and is only moderately processed. In addition, the individual limbs squeak with every movement. The optically similar hybrid smartwatch from Kronaby looks far better in a direct comparison.
The three factory-installed dials are in the colors of the fashion label and we like them. If you don't like the offered surfaces, you can add other skins at any time and configure them according to your ideas.
hardware
The Tommy Hilfiger smartwatch communicates via Bluetooth 4.1. with the smartphone. It supports all apps for Android Watch 1.0 and 2.0. The watch is waterproof to IPx8 and can remain on the wrist while washing hands or showering. The TH24 / 7 You is not suitable for swimming or diving. There is no heart rate monitoring, GPS or NFC, but a pedometer is available.
The manufacturer does not specify an exact battery life. In our practical Review, the battery lasted about one and a half days with average use. With intensive use and a permanently activated screen, the runtime drops rapidly; then the battery is empty after almost 20 hours. in practice you have to load it every day. It takes approximately three hours to fully charge. A 90 minute charge is sufficient to fill the battery 80 percent.
The watch achieves the greatest utility with an Android smartphone. The smartwatch is also compatible with iPhones with iOS, but the range of functions is significantly smaller due to the lack of interfaces. Much more than displaying notifications does not work with Apple devices. Wear OS and Android OS work together perfectly and thus enable a variety of functions.
Display
The round Amoled panel has a resolution of 400 × 400 pixels and takes up the entire dial. Unfortunately, it is not easy to get the technical data. The diagonal is just under 1.5 inches. The built-in display is therefore sufficiently sharp. The touch surface reacts precisely. The display is sufficiently bright and rich in contrast even in direct sunlight. The watch regulates its screen brightness depending on the ambient light. If you do not want this, you can also manually select one of five brightness levels.
When not in use, the display turns off to save the battery; a slight movement of the wrist is enough to wake up the screen. If you want, you can also activate the display permanently. A slimmed-down black and white version of the watch skin is then displayed in standby mode. Thanks to the Amoled display, this actually saves electricity, because with this technology – unlike LCDs – only luminous pixels need energy.
Tried out
In practice, the TH24 / 7 You works reliably. The pairing with the smartphone and the operation are easy and intuitive thanks to Android Wear, even for inexperienced buyers.
In addition to various skins, we also tried numerous apps. The messenger app Threema, Watch camera and the EBay software run without problems, for example. Messages land directly on the watch display; a glance at the wrist is enough to see why the smartphone vibrates. The transfer of the camera image from the smartphone to the smartwatch also works right away.
You can type in text directly on the watch, but we prefer to use our smartphone. Writing on the small screen is unnecessarily tedious and frustrating. The large smartphone display is also much more practical when reading long texts.
Conclusion
The Tommy Hilfiger smartwatch is a well-functioning smartwatch with an unspectacular design. The range of functions is huge thanks to Android Wear and associated apps. Especially because of the poor quality stainless steel bracelet, the watch ultimately does not convince us. If you still want the TH24 / 7 You, you should get the variant with leather strap.
Leather bracelet
Stainless steel bracelet silver
Stainless steel bracelet gold
If, in addition to smart technology, it is all about design and value, the TH24 / 7 is not our first choice. The somewhat carelessly designed case and the squeaky bracelet leave no positive impression. In terms of quality and feel, we liked the watches from Tag Heuer, Montblanc, Hugo Boss, Porsche and Fossil much better.
Other watches also have more to offer when it comes to features or battery life. For example, if you want to use your watch as a navigation device without a smartphone or need a heart rate monitoring, you should take a look at the Huawei Watch 2. This has integrated both GPS and a heartbeat sensor.
If you want a heartbeat sensor but don't want a large color display or GPS, you should take a look at the Nokia Steel HR hybrid smartwatch. The range of functions is significantly smaller, but the battery lasts forever compared to 20 days.
