Toyota and its Blaid project

Toyota, a globally recognized Japanese company in the field ofautomotive, is investing today like many big companies in completely different projects. The Japanese company has therefore chosen to enter the medical field and has developed a portable technology allowing the blind to be able to move with the least possible difficulty in confined spaces like housing, shops, etc.

So this wearable is made up of multiple sensors and cameras that identify things like stairs or doors. It looks like a necklace that rests on the blind man's shoulders and neck. This collar was not designed to replace guide dogs or canes, but rather to provide more information to people who use it and want to move independently.

From the autonomous car to the Blaid project

The Blaid project therefore makes it possible to contextualize and better inform the blind by using a technology similar to that used by Toyota for its autonomous cars. Indeed, the device consists of a technology allowing it to recognize situations, objects, and therefore inform the wearer accordingly.

The wearable therefore warns the user of an obstacle by vibrating or by emitting a sound signal directly from a speaker placed on it. The Blaid project also uses voice recognition and a series of buttons to allow the user tointeract with his device.

Toyota wants to extend its concept by integrating maps, object recognition, in short, by providing all the information that a dog or a cane cannot provide.

Currently, Toyota is starting to perform realistic tests on people with blindness. The date of marketing and the price are therefore not known, but it remains a proof that the technology of recognition and identification of objects in the automotive and road fields can be applied to various other functions.
