Triton 2 – TritonWear Unveils New Wearable for Swimming
Toronto-based company TritonWear has released the Triton 2. A device that records 13 swimming metrics at a time, transmitting real-time data for performance analysis.
The Triton 2 waterproof unit itself is hidden under the wearer's swim cap and paired with a coach’s smartphone or tablet. Once the wearer begins to swim, the device's inertial measurement unit (an accelerometer / gyroscope combo) tracks metrics such as line type, average speed by length, count / stroke rate , distance per tow, time underwater and the number of breaths per length.
All of this data is transmitted wirelessly to an iOS / Android application on the trainer's mobile device. There it is not only saved and displayed. But it is also treated by AI-based algorithms that have been developed with the help of high-level trainers. As a result, the app is able to provide feedback on the swimmer's performance. This includes suggestions on how they could be improved and what they should do to avoid injury.
In addition, if the coach uses his mobile device to record the swimmer's ehealth while swimming laps, that ehealth will be synchronized with the performance analysis recorded during playback. This means that the swimmer will be able to actually see what he is doing wrong.
The system can also be used offline, by synchronizing the recorded data with the application’s cloud server once Internet access is available. The Triton 2 is available now for $ 149 a year. An additional $ 39 per year is required for the ehealth motion analysis function. A similar crowdfunding scheme, the SwimBot, does not appear to have reached the production stage.
And yes, as its name implies, the Triton 2 is the successor to a product previously released. According to its designers, the new version is 60% smaller, 70% lighter, offers four times longer battery life and more precise sensors.
