URGOnight – EEG and brain training to improve your sleep
URGOnight is a new sleep training device designed to improve your ability to fall asleep and stay asleep through the use of neurofeedback and brain training. The URGOnight system includes an EEG headset and an associated mobile application. It is currently under crowdfunding on Indiegogo.
URGOnight: an EEG headset different from the others
EEG electroencephalography helmets have existed in various forms for several years and are generally based on a psychophysiological principle called neurofeedback. This implies that a subject watches some sort of brain activity in real time and uses certain exercises to try to directly regulate certain brain functions.
In the past, we've seen EEG neurofeedback headphones designed to help you relax; improve your focus and even improve your ability to achieve lucid dreams. URGOnight, the latest version of the technology, promises to improve your sleep by training you to better control your SMR; or sensorimotor rhythm, an inactive rhythm of brain waves thought to generate deep relaxation and ultimately improve the quality of sleep.
URGOnight is supposed to help a user better generate SMR brain waveforms on demand. The helmet with four electrodes measuring brain activity. The headset is associated with a smartphone application which guides the user through various exercises aimed at inducing the ideal SMR state for relaxation and sleep. The company says that after about a month of 20-minute sessions, three times a week, a user should start to notice the results.
A sleep training system
Since the device is a training system, it is not necessary to wear it at night or in bed. Instead, the goal of the system is to teach a user effective techniques that can be used at night when falling asleep.
There isn't much scientific research to validate that this type of SMR neurofeedback training actually works to improve sleep patterns. The company behind URGOnight cites two studies to support its claims; although the two studies are relatively small and did not Review this particular URGOnight system.
Nevertheless, these EEG-based neurofeedback devices are fascinating; providing individuals with compelling ways to try to biohack their own brain waves. URGOnight certainly seems to be one of the most sophisticated units ever made to date; but its elegant design will come at a price. The Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign offers the device for pre-order from 249 dollars. Then the price will be $ 500.
