Vendée Globe sailors, hoist your smart health connected objects!
[ad_1]
This Sunday was the start of the eighth Vendée Globe from Sables-d'Olonne in Vendée. With 29 skippers at the start, the competition will be tough and long to cross the oceans. Alone facing the elements of nature, these sailors will need help to reach the end of the journey. For the occasion, the editorial team concocted its selection of smart health connected objects for sailors. Hoist and ho sailors !
Find the sailors who fell into the water with Linkytag
The principle is very simple. The sailor is equipped with a box emitting a signal in Bluetooth. This is continuously captured by a smartphone integrating the dedicated application. For an alert to be triggered on the phone, the sensor must move away from a preset distance, 70 meters maximum. If the sailor goes overboard, the signal, not transmitted in the water, cuts off. In this situation, an alert is immediately triggered on the smartphone.
Linkytag is mainly dedicated to crews since the application can synchronize with 8 devices. It displays, for those on alert, the GPS coordinates of the incident, its distance, the course followed by the boat and that of the shipwrecked, as well as the time elapsed between the fall and the triggering of the alert.. Each member of the Linkytag community in the area also receives a notification on their smartphone with the location of the incident.
Linkytag requires no installation, just pair it with an iOS or Android smartphone with the dedicated GPS and GSM application. The 35 gram case operates on a replaceable battery with a lifespan of at least one year without interruption.
Wind Gauge from Netatmo, the smart health connected anemometer
Cylindrical in shape, the Wind Gauge provides precise and reliable measurement of wind speed and direction. For this, the anemometer continuously sends ultrasound with a signal varying according to the winds. All information is transmitted to a smartphone using a dedicated application. The sailor will be able to consult the statistics and the wind history.
The Wind Gauge has a battery life of two years and is powered by two AA batteries. It is sold with a tripod to be fixed to a standard clip. The French company Netatmo said that the anemometer is weatherproof, fortunately. The Wind Gauge is available for 99 € but does not only works with the Netatmo weather station, sold separately at € 169. For smaller budgets, the editorial staff recommends the Vaavud, a portable device also providing information on the winds.
To always stay the course
Navionics Boating and Vexilar have teamed up to offer a WiFi sounder that can be displayed directly on a tablet. The first provides the mapping application and the second provides the T-Box, an easy-to-set up WiFi sounder.
Navionics' SonarPhone application provides access to sonar information and full-screen or shared mapping. It thus locates the position of the boat on the map and analyzes the depths at the same time. Data sharing between smart health connected users is also possible to improve SonarCharts Live, a bathymetric map available on plotters, mobiles and on the Internet. The Navionics database is enriched with all the contributions of sailors.

The application is used in combination with the Vexilar SonarPhone T-Box which transmits the readings directly to a smartphone or tablet. The device is easily installed in a boat and requires just a 12 volt outlet. It sends an echo and determines the depth of the water at 240 feet maximum as well as the composition of the soils (sand, rocks). The sounder also spots the presence of fish for those who are hungry.
The SonarPhone T-Box uses Wifi for data transmission and therefore does not require network coverage. It comes with a cigarette lighter adapter and comes with an armband for easy access to your phone for $ 149.95.
