watch out for chronic consumption

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are valuable pain relievers, but care should be taken not to take them chronically.

As their name suggests, the anti-inflammatory nonsteroidal drugs (NSAIDs) are a class of medication that helps fightinflammation via various mechanisms. However, they are less powerful than their steroid counterparts such as corticosteroids. They are generally intended to hinder the smooth running of the inflammatory cascade of the body causing pain, fever, redness and other discomfort. If their use is not necessary when the inflammation is moderate and serves a specific purpose (a moderate fever to eliminate a pathogenic for example), it becomes so when the balance of benefits and risks of "natural" inflammation becomes negative.

NSAIDs: not harmless drugs

NSAIDs group together a set of molecules which inhibit the formation of prostaglandins (mediators of inflammation). Among them, we can cite ibuprofen and ketoprofen which are two powerful anti-inflammatory drugs. Like all medicines, there are undesirable effects (headache, dizziness, digestive disorders, allergic reactions) and contraindications to their consumption. This is particularly the case if we take anti coagulants, of lithium, methotrexate, diuretics, converting enzyme inhibitors and inhibitors ofangiotensin II. Similarly, their consumption is prohibited if one has a history ofasthma, digestive bleeding related to NSAIDs, for digestive ulcers, liver disease, heart failure or kidney and if you are pregnant.

This is why NSAIDs, when prescribed, should be used at the lowest possible doses during a duration also as short as possible. These drugs are almost all subject to prescription except the two that we have mentioned. This does not detract from the caution that must be exercised when consuming it. In this regard, they are no longer available for free access in our pharmacies since we gradually realized the very harmful effect on the liver chronic and unsupervised consumption.

Against chronic consumption: the end of over-the-counter sales

Because of the easy availability and the systematic nature of the drug prescription, it has been found that some people take NSAIDs for anything and everything. This kind of behavior is for example also maintained by the homeopathic doctrine and its granules, which does not have any own effectiveness (that is to say, beyond the contextual effects), but which, for each affection, advocates a remedy oral when it is sometimes enough, simply to wait, eat better and rest.

Since January 2020, these drugs are no longer freely available on a drug agency decision, that is to say, to obtain them, you must ask your pharmacist. The latter must then ask you a few questions, in order to prevent misuse. In fact, many people with liver problems turn out to be frequent (too frequent) users of NSAIDs. It is therefore strongly recommended not to abuse it.

Counterfeiting: beware of drugs sold on the Internet Counterfeiting affects all sectors, even that of medicines. Copies imitate the name and the form of the existing treatments but do not contain any active ingredient. Worse, some can even be dangerous. The Anti-Counterfeit Medicines Research Institute (IRACM) talks about this during this ehealth.
