What are the advantages of teleworking?

Praised by many employees, little practiced by employers, teleworking is however a source of many advantages for both parties. This organization of work is starting to develop more and more within companies which are gradually seeing the benefits of working from health home.

What is telework?

Telework is defined as a work organization done outside the premises of the company by a voluntary employee, using information technology, while this work could be carried out within the company.

Framed by the labor code, telework cannot be imposed on an employee but can constitute a hiring criterion. The employer can offer telework to his employee and conversely, the employee can request to be teleworked to his employer. Typically, teleworking takes place one to two days a week.

According to a study by the Dares (Research, Studies and Statistics Animation Department), in 2017, 3% of employees practiced teleworking at least once a week. In February 2019, a Malakoff Médéric study reported that 29% of employees declared that they were concerned by telework.

More and more employees say they are attracted to telework. Indeed, it can provide many benefits to those who practice it:

  • less absenteeism and delays;

  • reduction in overall costs linked to the presence of an employee in the company;

  • ease of employability of people in a situation of handicap ;

  • less distraction or tension between colleagues;

  • bigger productivity ;

  • improvement of the working conditions of employees, their motivation and their involvement in the company.

How is teleworking organized between employer and employee?

In principle, telework can be applied to all employees and to all socio-professional categories. In fact, this is not the case, depending on the position occupied by the worker or his sector of activity. Thus, in the same company, an employer can grant telework to one employee and refuse it to another. In the event of refusal, the employer has the obligation to justify his decision.

Employees in telework have the same rights and obligations as their office colleagues. They have all the equipment necessary for working from health home and the conditions for teleworking are formalized in writing between the employer and the employee. This makes it possible to define the days of telework, time slots, meetings … This formalization also allows the employee to weigh some disadvantages linked to telework who may feel isolated and have the feeling of not being able to develop professionally as well as their colleagues at the office.
