Las Vegas will host the largest trade show dedicated to new technologies from Tuesday 7 to Friday 10 January. Digital will be on hand to cover the event. Here's what to expect for this 2020 edition.

Like every year, the world of high-tech and consumer electronics meets in Las Vegas, at the Consumer Electronic Show, the world's largest trade fair dedicated to technological innovation. Created 53 years ago, this show has become essential for high-tech giants, but also for young people start-uppers in search of international recognition.

French Tech has occupied an important place there for several years. French government ministers flocked to display their technophilia. We remember the remarkable passages of the successive Secretaries of State responsible for Digital (Fleur Pellerin, Axelle Lemaire, Mounir Mahjoubi), but also Emmanuel Macron when he was Minister of the Economy in 2016.

French Tech too present?

In 2019, some 360 young hexagonal shoots made the trip, allowing France to occupy third place on the podium in terms of delegation, behind China (2nd) and the host country, The United States. But beyond this permanent escalation of the "start-up nation" wanted by the current head of state, this race for posters ends up serving the message of start-ups. As Thomas Husson, VP & Principal Analyst at Forrester recalls, "given the large number of start-ups and high-tech consumer brands announcing new products at the event, it is difficult to stand out at CES".

This is why we should expect in 2020 a decrease in the French presence. "Incubators and regions have realized that the number is not compatible with the quality, explains Franck Sebag, partner at EY in charge of start-ups. And to recall the real interest of being present in Las Vegas. "This is useful for companies that present electronic products. It’s less so for Blablacars or software manufacturers".

And it is obviously necessary to subscribe to the trendy technological trends, those which will receive the most attention.

The essentials of CES

So precisely, if last year we were talking about 5G, 8K, autonomous cars, what will be the big technologies this year?

When analysts are questioned, everyone agrees that 5G will once again be there, since it is the big start for this technology of the future in terms of communication. But as Thomas Husson recalls, "for consumers, 5G in 2020 will be like 3G in 2004 or 4G in 2010. In the absence of critical size and new use cases, 5G will remain mainly a debate between telecommunications operators, suppliers of network equipment and industrial companies".

We will also have to rely on artificial intelligence which is interfering everywhere more than ever. With the question of how to get the most out of it. According to Franck Sebag, this is an area in which France has things to say. And to recall the recent takeover of Snips, a Parisian start-up specializing in voice recognition, by Sonos.Samsung should also take advantage of this show to present its new artificial intelligence called Neon. According to the Korean manufacturer, the latter would be "an artificial human", moreover specifying that this new AI has nothing to do with Bixby.

The other sector to follow is finally health and well-being. "The future evolution, for Franck Sebag, it's data in health. We must take a stand now"For proof? The takeover of Fitbit by Google. American justice has also looked into this takeover, and fears the grip of the giant of Menlo Park on personal data."Privacy and security issues will be central"at CES, warns Thomas Husson.

Sector-by-sector innovations

House

This year, on the health home side, the CES should give pride of place to the security of the smart health connected health home with new surveillance cameras, locks or even smart health connected doorbells. One thinks in particular of the tactile lock from PassiveBolt which won the CES innovation prize in the Smart-health home category and which is based on a tactile control system.

Other players in the sector could embark on this field (Somfy, Legrand, Schneider Electric …) Many should offer their solutions around smart health connected security this year.

The trend also seems to be towards smart health connected robot vacuums. These devices are expected to show significant improvements this year. On this side, we await news from Roborock or iRobot. According to rumors, the American manufacturer will present a new robot vacuum cleaner / security camera.

"Unusual" appliances should still be there, like the FoldiMate folding machine that caused a sensation in the aisles of the show last year. We should again find small nuggets this season, including the indoor gardening device in the form of a LG refrigerator.

Mobility

CES in Las Vegas is not really known for announcing new smartphones. However, it is a fair that dictates trends and, in fact, some phone manufacturers are making the trip to showcase their innovations.

This is the case of OnePlus which, under an enigmatic invitation, confirms that it will present a concept-phone at the American show. However, impossible to know more and we will have to wait until January 7 to discover the object tease by the Chinese brand on the occasion of its 6th anniversary. Another manufacturer to present phones: Samsung. The South Korean firm has chosen the Consumer Electronics Show to officially unveil its Galaxy S10 Lite as well as its Galaxy Note 10 Lite, two smartphones whose multiple characteristics we already know.

Finally, 2020 will finally mark the advent of foldable smartphones, but also 5G. It would therefore not be surprising to see them on the various stands.

Audio: new applications for 3D sound?

Let's not hide it: the 2020 trends in the audio world should not hold big surprises for us. The keywords that still stir the market today were already known a year ago, in particular "artificial intelligence" and "true wireless"So voice assistants, including Alexa and Google Assistant, will continue to invite themselves on an ever-increasing number of health home speakers. On the mobile audio side, truly wireless headphones should abound with the same stunning vigor they had already shown last September at IFA Berlin.

Anything new to eat then? Not necessarily. It may be on the 3D sound side that innovation will be sought: not only the three-dimensional formats Dolby Atmos and DTS: X will again and again impose their ubiquity on the new sound bars presented – we already know that, as usual, LG in particular will carry out a complete renewal of its range, but one could also see their field of application overflowing from health home-cinema, to extend to music. The year 2019 saw the launch, more or less on the sly, of initiatives such as music in Dolby Atmos on Amazon Music HD, and Sony's 360 Reality Audio platform. And if Amazon has already launched its Echo Studio speaker, capable on paper of restoring Atmos spatialization, the Japanese giant could create the event by launching its own smart health connected speaker compatible with these formats … Unless, well sure, that he does not prefer to focus on a safe bet: his new wireless noise reduction headphones WH-1000XM4, successor to the immensely popular WH-1000XM3, whose imminent unveiling has already been spoile by a filing with the Federal Communications Commission !

smart health connected car

Over the years, the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) has welcomed more and more car manufacturers and equipment manufacturers.

BMW will present a futuristic concept with autonomous driving as well as an i3 Urban Suite whose cabin has been transformed into "boutique"in order to"create a welcoming space".

Daimler-Mercedes will unveil yet another concept car packed with technologies of the future alongside the EQC 400 4MATIC SUV and the Vision EQS, an electric and luxurious S-Class seen at the last Frankfurt Motor Show.

Hyundai ventures into the air with a concept of an autonomous flying machine, the fruit of the new division created last October and called Urban Air Mobility Division. In addition, the automaker will unveil an autonomous vehicle "ultra customizable in size and use, offering endless possibilities going beyond simple means of transport".

Note the dual presence of Renault for a connectivity solution between the car and the house developed with Otodo as well as a utility running on hydrogen via Faurecia.Dassault Systèmes will be present via the start-up Canoo (autonomous vehicle) while Saint-Gobain will unveil an intelligent windshield. Bosch will present a capable surveillance system "analyze the vehicle interior and potentially save livesVoice specialist Cerence (Nuance Communications) will also be on hand, as will equipment manufacturer ZF, who will bring with him new driver assistance systems (ADAS).

Computer science

If we should only mention one computer manufacturer that is expected for this 2020 edition of CES, it is obviously Intel: the latter will have a lot to do to reassure both its partners and observers. Mired in a shaky 10 nm process, the company is also having difficulty supplying the market with 14 nm chips. We therefore expect clear plans for its 10th generation of Core processors for desktop computers, but also a point on its graphics cards expected later this year. AMD for its part should take advantage of the show to launch its new chips for laptops (Ryzen "Renoir"). For two years, the brand has continued to gain positions on the market for stationary computers, but is still struggling to convince the main players in the nomadic world. New 7nm processors could spark renewed interest at Acer, HP, Dell or Asus. It is not excluded that the firm will also say more about its new high-end graphics solutions expected for the summer.

Finally, the CES will be an opportunity to see if certain trends are confirmed on the laptop side: we will see if the "dual-screen" fashion has only been temporary or will be the subject of more successful integrations than the ones we’ve seen so far. The presence of Oled screens, increased refresh rates in the gaming and adherence to the Wi-Fi 6 standard will also be scrutinized. And why not hope to discover models that will integrate GeForce RTX 20 Super graphics cards – not yet announced by Nvidia it is true. Nvidia, precisely, should focus its communication around AI and its solutions for servers and the automobile. For a few years, the brand has been reserving its announcements intended for the general public at other events (the GDC, the E3, and even Gamescom). That said, we are only asking to be surprised.
