When Google's artificial intelligence makes it easier to detect breast cancer

Artificial intelligence to better detect cancers. A team of researchers helped by AI specialists from Google have developed a new system to improve the detection of breast cancer.

The collaboration took place between DeepMind, the Cancer Research UK Imperial Center, Northwestern University and the Royal Surry County Hospital. To do this, the team analyzed 76,000 mammograms of British women and 15,000 of American women. All were anonymized.

Almost 10% improvement in some cases

After training the AI model designed for the occasion, it was tested on exams by 25,000 women in Britain and 3,000 in the United States.

Without being spectacular, the results are however conclusive. Artificial intelligence has reduced false negatives by 5.7% and 1.2% respectively in the United States and Great Britain. On false positives, the improvement is significantly greater, with a decrease of 9.4% in the United States and 2.7% in Great Britain.

Google hopes to be able to perfect the model so that it is ultimately used in hospitals on real cases.

AI already serving health

This is not the first time Google has tested artificial intelligence in the healthcare field. In December 2018, a study explained that it could detect cancers from simple pathological data patients.

In February 2018 another study demonstrated how AI could predict heart attacks by analyzing the retina from the eyes of a patient. Finally, in May 2019, the discipline tackled the detection of lung cancer, again successfully.
