Which countries have the best health system?

Despite significant resources devoted to health and almost universal access to care, France does not even appear in the top 10 of countries with the best health system. The first places are taken by Asian and Nordic countries.

France often prides itself on having one of the best health systems to the world, with almost free and unlimited access to healthcare. However, according to the classification established by the Legatum Prosperity Index, it is not even in the top 10. This ranking, published each year by the British think tank Legatum Institute, is based on around fifty criteria, such as obesity rate, the immunization coverage, infant mortality, number of doctors per capita, life expectancy or citizens' satisfaction with care.

Health system: France ranked 16e

According to this ranking, Singapore has the best health system in the world, followed by Japan and Switzerland. France only arrives at 16e behind Sweden and just ahead of Italy. Singapore is distinguished in particular by the excellent general health of its citizens (number of smokers, prevalence diseases …) and by its health cover financed by both the public and the private sector. France, although having quality staff, very easy access to healthcare compared to other countries and second in the world in matter oflife expectancy, is in the red concerning the number of smokers, the use of drugs and illicit substances, or the prevalence of depression. Worse, while our country devotes more than 11% of its GDP to its healthcare system, the highest share in the entire European Union, citizen satisfaction with the latter fell from 82.9% in 2009 to 69.4% in 2019.
