Whirlpool W9OM24S1PBSS: Review, price and specification – Built-in oven
[ad_1]
According to its technical sheet, the built-in oven Whirlpool W9OM24S1PBSS (3650 watts) is not lacking. First, it uses pulsed heat; a fan at the bottom of the cavity, surrounded by a circular resistor, distributes the hot air evenly throughout the 73-liter muffle. Note that some steps of the enclosure can be equipped with telescopic rails. Whirlpool has chosen a 4.3 inch screen for programming, which can also be done remotely since the W9OM24S1PBSS can be smart health connected to a smartphone equipped with the 6th Sense application, available on iOS and Android. On paper, the Whirlpool W9OM24S1PBSS seems well equipped, and yet its price does not exceed € 899 at launch, which remains very reasonable for a model as well equipped.
Completely devoid of physical buttons and wheel, the control panel of the Whirlpool W9OM24S1PBSS consists of a large touch screen and a few sensitive keys. These are used to switch on the oven, to access the health home screen or to adjust the options. Thanks to them, you can also add a cooking (programmed by the user) to your favorites or launch the remote setting via your smartphone. Finally, the rightmost sensitive button is used to cancel the actions.
It is using the large touch screen that the user sets their cooking times. He must first choose between a manual adjustment or the 6th Sense functions which in fact constitutes a cooking assistant.
Manual programming starts with the choice of a cooking mode (natural convection, forced heat …); the different possibilities are scrolled up or down. Please note, the tree structure is not very instinctive and certain practical modes are placed in tabs, which must first be opened before being able to access the desired mode. All of this is a bit cluttered and it will take time to master everything.
Then comes the temperature setting, which is also based on a touch of the screen, horizontal this time. Some ovens equipped with a touch screen allow this data to be entered using a numeric keypad. This is not the case here and it will sometimes be necessary to scroll through many possibilities before selecting the right setting, which can quickly prove tedious. And very surprisingly, we can however indicate an end of cooking time thanks to … a numeric keypad!
The presence of the screen partially simplifies the use of the cooking assistant. Thanks to this interface, the Whirlpool W9OM24S1PBSS is able to indicate very precisely, in full, the name of the dish. In addition, he gives some tips for successful cooking, such as the level of the oven or how to prepare food for cooking (brush with oil, for example).
However, as is the case for manual mode, the tree structure sometimes lacks logic. The wizard's welcome screen (what the user sees after touching the 6th Sense button) is made up of two tiles: "6th sense food list" and "6th sense lifestyle", titles that are missing of clarity but which group more or less the same dishes.
The first method allows you to make your choice by starting with the main categories of food (meat, vegetables, fish …) then specifying your choice little by little; a practical method, used on the vast majority of ovens with a cooking assistant. To cook a whole chicken, for example, you select "meat", then "chicken" before stopping on "whole chicken", before indicating the weight of the animal and the desired level of browning.
The second method, based on lifestyle therefore, is more erratic and one is never really sure to find the dish sought. You can for example find the program for cooking shrimp if you have chosen a "barbecue" lifestyle.
In general, it seems that the engineers have run out of time to refine the software part of the W9OM24S1PBSS. In addition to research based on a lifestyle, far from being relevant, the quantities are sometimes indicated in centimeters, which can at best be conceived for a steak, but which is more difficult to grasp when talking about sausage. We will also rail against the connection to a smartphone, made complicated by an ineffective QR code recognition; it is therefore necessary to wander within an interminable series of product codes, very similar to each other and composed of numerous figures. Too bad, pairing is easily done after passing this pitfall.
Note that connecting to a smartphone does not bring much innovative. It essentially serves as a remote control panel. Whirlpool has however provided a selection of recipes to follow step by step. At the end of the preparation, the cook can send the cooking parameters to the oven directly, which eliminates the need to adjust the appliance yourself.
The muffle reaches a very comfortable volume of 73 liters, sufficient to accommodate the largest pieces of meat. Good point, the racks can be easily removed for pyrolysis cleaning and the manufacturer provides a pair of telescopic rails to place yourself on one of the five shelf levels. Also included are two grills and a broiler pan.
The Whirlpool W9OM24S1PBSS offers a range of cooking modes that allow comfortable daily use, but you will have to navigate through the different menus to find the most suitable.
In fact, the manual mode health home screen only offers six direct access modes: convection, forced convection (the top heater heats up and the fan turns), forced heat, grill, turbo grill cooking and rapid preheating ( which does not constitute a real cooking method). This offer is completed in the three tabs that are Frozen, Cook 4 (for baking cookies, pies or pizzas) and Special Functions: Defrost (again), Keeping warm, Oven (useful for reheating food stored at room temperature : cookies, muffins, pasta dishes …), Maxi Cooking (for large pieces of meat) and finally Eco Air Pulsé.
In our opinion, it would have been much more relevant to add a few modes on the manual mode health home screen, such as those grouped in the Cook 4 tab and which use the sole resistance as well as the fan to dry the bottom of the pies or quiches.
The cooking assistant seems quite complete since it offers many preparations, ranging from chicken breast to strudel. But as we mentioned, it is better to use the "6th sense food list" page, whose classification is much more logical than that of the "6th sense lifestyle" tab.
The W9OM24S1PBSS takes a little time to increase the temperature in the muffle from 25 ° C to 185 ° C. In static heat mode, it needs 10 minutes and 20 seconds, which makes it one of the less rapid models of our comparison in the exercise. Things get a little better in forced heat mode since you have to wait "only" 7 min 40 s. Fortunately, by activating the rapid preheating mode, the time required for our Review is only 4 min 40 s.
But once the temperature is reached, it hardly changes, as the curves in our graphs show.
In pulsed heat mode, at 200 ° C as at 250 ° C, we can certainly notice very slight temperature variations, but these are far too insignificant and close together to have a harmful effect on delicate cooking.
These excellent results are even better in static heat mode, again at 200 ° C as at 250 ° C. The very straight curves show that there is no undercooking or overcooking phase, which is ideal for obtaining perfect meringues or soufflés.
Finally, even eco mode can be used here, which is not often the case for other ovens. The temperature curves are certainly more uneven, which proves that the temperature is not stabilized to perfection. This will not affect the proper cooking of the family lasagna dish.
Finally, the four curves are very close to each other. This shows that the heat is uniform throughout the enclosure; all cookies on a shortbread cookie sheet will be browned the same way, whether placed on the front or back.
Whirlpool has successfully contained the electricity requirements of the W9OM24S1PBSS.
It takes 0.69 kWh to pass our 45-minute consumption Review, which consists of passing the temperature from 25 ° C to 200 ° C and then maintaining it. This result places the Whirlpool oven in the average of the other built-in ovens in our comparison. We can establish a similar observation for the pulsed heat mode which consumes 0.76 kWh for this exercise.
And if it was still a little too much, the eco mode (quite usable, remember) requires only 0.61 kWh to reach the end of the 45 minutes.
Built-in ovens are not noisy appliances and the W9OM24S1PBSS is no exception. In fast preheating mode, with the fans running at maximum speed, the sound level does not exceed 43 dB (A).
