Xerox – Overview of its color laser multifunction printers

Xerox shows teeth. The inventor of the photocopier, the Ethernet network and the modern graphical interface plans to buy HP. Pending the follow-up to this saga, let's review its proposal for color multifunction printers.

The Xerox range has pretty good arguments to make. We note – and appreciate – in particular a “lifetime warranty” which does not however exempt the purchase of the consumable modules that are the toners, but also the oven, the printing unit and the waste toner container. This is still the case with all laser printers, past large print volumes – over 30,000 pages on these models.

Reading its specifications on paper, the WorkCentre 6515V / DNI printer surprises with its price, which we think is measured. In this version with Wi-Fi, direct printing from mobiles, network, duplex and document feeder – to photocopy several pages at once, it is very practical! -, it outputs 28 pages per minute and offers a very large color screen, where small monochrome screens are still too often found.

For families, small working groups

If it turns out to be remarkably light in the wallet for such features, pay attention to the price of consumables. The price of those of original stings and Xerox clearly catches up with them. Count € 92 per color cartridge for only 1,000 pages, plus € 118 for the black ink cartridge (2,500 pages) and you have a cost per page of 32 cents for the four colors.

“Extra large capacity” cartridges are available to reduce the usage bill. They are priced at € 187 per color for 4,300 pages and € 150 for black (5,500 pages), or a cost price per page “full color” halved, or 16 cents.

For comparison, the printer HP Color LaserJet M477fdw offers 12 cents per page. The Brother MFC-L3750CDW, tested recently, also claims a cost of 16 cents per page.

Even if Xerox is obviously not in favor of it for its own models and slows down their use, there are some who turn to compatible toners dramatically dropping the “painful”. A kit at around € 50 accommodates black toner (5,500 pages) and three color cartridges (2,400 pages each), for a final cost per page of less than 2 cents.

Fun fact: If Xerox takes a dim view of compatible cartridges in its printers, the brand is not shy to encourage users of rival models to opt for compatible cartridges… marked Xerox !

Above the WorkCentre 6515, we change families to see the VersaLink C405. This printer is designed for maximum print volumes of 75,000 pages per month and is equipped with two trays for a total of 700 input sheets.

For more volume

Higher capacity cartridges are offered at € 290 per color (8,000 pages) and € 199 for black (10,500 pages). Scientific calculator feverishly put to work, we get a cost of 13 cents per page – against 23 cents, still relatively high, therefore.

Again, compatible toners exist and drop the cost per page to about 1 cent, if we rely on the autonomy announced.

NB: we have not yet tested these printers or compatible cartridges. But temptation makes us look good …
