Xiaomi unveils the Mi Watch Color, the watch smart health connected to hundreds of fake combinations

Xiaomi has presented in China a new smart health connected watch under Wear OS whose particularity is to offer a very wide choice of customizations. According to the manufacturer, the figure amounts to 1,540 possible combinations. But with two case colors and seven different bracelets, there is obviously a trick. And this happens at the software level. Explanations.

Xiaomi is known for its incredible value for money products. Some examples in telephony: the Mi 9T Pro, the cheapest smartphone with a Snapdragon 855 from Qualcomm; the Redmi Note 8 Pro, an excellent phablet which is very affordable, but which does not forget to be very complete. Accessibility has therefore become the main commercial argument of the Chinese brand.

And this is confirmed again this week. The brand has indeed presented the Mi Watch Color, a smart health connected watch running on the Wear OS operating system. We will come back to the technical aspect here in a few lines. Note, however, that Xiaomi promotes its watch using two arguments: price and personalization. The amount requested by the brand for this watch is 799 yuan, just over 100 euros.

In terms of personalization, the Chinese firm hits hard since it announces on its website 1540 possible combinations to customize the watch and adapt it to all outfits. 1540 combinations is strong! … Or not. Because, in reality, you don't have so many permutations in the Mi Watch Color ecosystem. There are two boxes (black and gray). There are seven different bracelets, including one made of leather. So you get 14 bracelet / case combinations. Where did the remaining 1,526 combinations go?

A purely marketing argument

You have to look at the software side. Because the interface of the Mi Watch Color has 110 different wallpapers. You then get the 1540 combinations. The account is good, Master Capello! Note that other permutations are planned, in particular thanks to a golden box, which will bring their number to … more than 2300 (without counting the probable future watchfaces).

Fortunately, the Mi Watch Color has other arguments. Technical, this time. Its round AMOLED screen measures 1.39 inches. The definition is 454 x 454 pixels. The case is waterproof (5ATM certification) and stainless steel. Its battery is 420 mAh, for 14 days autonomy announced (this can go up to 22 days by switching off certain sensors, such as GPS). It integrates a Bluetooth 5.0 connection to connect to a smartphone, an NFC sensor, a microphone to speak to a voice assistant, a GPS sensor (Glonass), a heart rate monitoring, a gyroscope or an accelerometer.
