Yi Jing acupuncture from Dr. Chen – Chén Zhào hè sōng yìxué zhēn fǎ (陈 照 鹤 松 易学 针 法) – smart health with Traditional Chinese Medicine
Dr. Chen Chao is a living legend of contemporary acupuncture. He is famous for developing ultra-efficient medical applications based on the ancient principles of Yi Jing. The work of Dr. Chen Chao has recently been widely disseminated by the world famous Dr. Richard Teh-Fu Tan. During his seminars, Dr. Tan regularly paid tribute to Dr. Chen Chao and attributed to him the authorship of his own treatment methods.
The method of dr. Chen is based on the most basic principle of Yi Jing and Taoist philosophy: balance. By combining the principles of Yi Jing, the classical theories of Nei Jing and the metaphysical principles of Chinese astrology, Dr. Chen has developed a remarkably effective method for balancing the channels of acupuncture and treating diseases. Dr. Chen says that effective acupuncture treatment necessarily involves the use of relevant points in different acupuncture systems or models.
There are several ways in this approach to choose the channels for our treatments:
(1) Choose the related channel in the Biao-Li relation (八卦 成 列).
For example, if the pain is on point P10 Yuji on the left, we choose point GI4 Hegu on the right hand. We can also choose to treat the Zu Yangming channel.
(2) Choose the channel of the same name (八卦 相 荡).
If the dysfunctional channel is Shou Yangming then we are treating Zu Yangming.
(3) Use the four trinities (四 局 针 法).
The 3 yin of arms represent Fire; the 3 yangs of hand represent Wood; the 3 yin of foot represent the Metal and the 3 yang of foot represent the Water.
The principle of choosing the channel for treatment is as follows: if the diseased channel belongs to the Fire trinity, use acupuncture points on channels belonging to the Metal trinity; if the sick channel belongs to the Metal trinity, we choose points on channels belonging to the Fire trinity. If the diseased canal belongs to the Wood trinity, we choose acupuncture points on channels belonging to the Water trinity. If the diseased canal belongs to the Water trinity, we choose acupuncture points on channels belonging to the Wood trinity.
This means that if the diseased canal is a hand Yin, we choose acupuncture points on the foot Yin channels. If the diseased canal is an Yang of the arms, we choose acupuncture points on the Yang canals of the foot. Finally, if the diseased canal is on the left, we choose to treat on the right side.
Note that the theory Zàngfǔ bié tōng (脏腑 别 通) does not belong to the original system of Dr. Chen. Richard Tan will add it to the methods of his channel balancing system.
(4) Theory of Ba Gua.
There are more than 13 point selection strategies based on Ba Gua theory. I develop some of these strategies during my seminars.
We can easily integrate into this system a selection of points based on the diagnosis by the radial pulse. Pulse diagnosis is the easiest way to detect the body’s Qi state. The treatment then consists in balancing the pulse. We only have to identify whether the pulse is large or small, deep or floating, slow or fast, smooth or rough.
If the pulse is normalized then the disease improves, even if the pain or any other symptom is not immediately corrected during the course of treatment.
The selection of points on the channels partially follows the holographic theory (全息 理论) and the anatomical correspondence theory or mirror / reflection theory (镜像 理论).
We can also use the theory of the corresponding structure (体 体 相应) and the theory of the phase corresponding to the structure (体 象 stimuler) and for example stimulate the tendons to treat a disease of the wind, stimulate the muscles to treat the humidity, stimulate the periosteum to treat illness due to cold, etc.
Finally, the theory of the effect of puncture depth (深度 效应) states that a shallow puncture treats shallow diseases (such as skin or upper body diseases), symptoms close to punctured point, while deeper puncture treats symptoms far from the punctured point or diseases of the internal organs.
For example, puncturing E36 Zusanli on the surface treats diseases of the leg, puncturing more deeply treats diseases of the stomach and intestines, and finally, puncturing deeply treats cardiac and pulmonary diseases as well as facial paralysis (insertion at 2 cun deep and with the tip of the needle pointing towards the head).
I often choose three theories to select the channels to be treated: the consecutive channels of the same polarity on the circadian clock, the notions of opening, pivoting and closing of the 3 yin 3 yang and the Biao-Li relationship. For example, if the dysfunctional channel is Shou Yangming, I select Zu Yangming, Zu Jueyin and Shou Taiyin for treatment. I often treat the Yin channels on the side opposite the sick channel and the Yang channels on the same side.
I first puncture the Luo point of the dysfunctional channel in order to open the connection with the other channels selected for treatment, then I select the points on the other meridians according to the mirror / reflection theory and / or the holographic theory.
