The Lantern Festival is celebrated on the fifteenth day of the first month of the lunar year in the Chinese calendar. That day officially ends the week of celebrations of the Chinese New Year (Spring Festival).

Children carry lanterns in temples dice the coming evening and solve riddles on the lanterns. It also will eat Yuanxiao 元宵, a very popular food during the Chinese New Year. YuanXiao is a sweet dumpling made with very few ingredients. Flour sticky rice (glutinous rice) and black sesame powder are available in Asian markets. If you can not find the black sesame powder, just grind black sesame seeds in a food mixer. Some families do, and others buy them.

RECIPE Yuan Xiao

Preparation time: 15 minutes – Cooking time: 20 minutes

ingredients

– 500 g rice flour pasting

– 200 g butter

– 200 g black sesame powder

– 250 g of sugar

– 1 teaspoon of wine

– water

Preparation

1 / Mix the butter with sesame powder, sugar and wine. (You need to heat the mixture a little).

2 / Turn dough into small balls, using approximately 1 tablespoon level of coffee each and rolling in small balls with your hands.

3 / Place the glutinous rice flour in a large mixing bowl.

4 / Add water a little at a time, working and forming the dough until it has a firm texture (not too slowly but smooth and easy to maneuver).

5 / Train Sezame balls

– Cut a piece of dough about the size of a golf ball. Roll the dough into a ball. Use your thumb to make a deep impression in the dough, place a sesame ball into hole and close it up. It is important to ensure that the sesame ball is completely covered with dough. Continue with the rest of the dough.

– Cook the dumplings in boiled water. Be sure to keep turning in the same direction while cooking (in the sense of the needles of a watch for example). When they float on the water, continue to boil for about one minute reducing fire.

NOTES

– Glutinous rice flour can be a bit sticky: the dough sticks to your hands because you added too much water. If this happens, add a little rice flour. First, if the dough is too dry, add more water, the As and little at a time.

– The amount of water for cooking recquise may vary exactly as the moisture level where you live and the age of the flour.
